We’re here to reacquaint ourselves with his taste.\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe world is quite enough\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003eWhisky purists – avert your gaze. Why? Well, because some of you might scoff at the fact that we’ll be trying out blended drams. And we’re not just talking Scotland, we’ll be discovering the whole world, one sip at a time. We are talking about the international man of mystery, are we not? (Or was that Austin Powers?)\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLicense to \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003edistill\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003eAnyway, despite what some of you might believe, Scotland does not possess the exclusive right to make Whisky. In fact, some argue that other countries have edged ahead in the malt-making business. We wouldn’t go that far, but we have to give credit where credit is due. A well-traveled man like James Bond appreciates diversity, and so do we.\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNever say never to blends again\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003eThere is more at play than just diversity, though. Bond could make any drink cool, but blended Whiskies are a genuine delight – on par with single malts. Just give them a chance. We’re talking about a mix of malt and grain Whiskies, sourced from several different distilleries. Master blenders use anywhere from 15, to even 50 different Whiskies to strike the perfect balance of flavor.\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSame character, different movie\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003eBlending Whisky is a delicate and sophisticated art. The malts and grains in a blend must be carefully chosen to complement and strengthen one another. The whole should be greater than the sum of its parts. Year in, year out. Identity and consistency. Or to put it in Bond terms – same character, different movie.\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e“Do I look like I give a damn?”\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003eIn one of his more recent movies, Bond again orders his signature Vodka martini. However, when asked by the bartender if he wants it shaken or stirred, Bond replies: “Do I look like I give a damn?” We concur with the rather ironic poke at this classic Bond phrase. Blended Whisky will work in a variety of fashions. The bottle, signed by Craig and his co-stars, eventually sold for an incredible £9635 at auction.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e3) Perhaps Bond is into single malts now, but in the golden age of 007 in the 1960’s, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eblended Whisky was basically all there was\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, since the single malt category really only took off long after Ian Fleming had already written all his novels.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e4)\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e Single malt\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e was not always as cultivated as it is today, but much harsher and more unrefined. Initially all the distillers only made blends – the more refined variety of Whisky, and by doing so made it the gentleman’s drink we know today.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e5) \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMore than 90%\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e of all the Whisky sold in the world remains blended.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e6) It is said that if you are a fan of a blended Whisky, chances are you would also be a fan of \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe core component single malts\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e that comprise the blend.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003c\/div\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv\u003e7) There's a common misconception that because a certain Whisky is labelled \"single malt,\" it must be the product of just a single batch or barrel of Whisky. This is incorrect. There's an 'e' in 'Whiskey' when it's Irish. Historically,\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e Irish Whiskey distillers\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e inserted an 'e' to their spelling to differentiate their product from Scotch Whisky. American Whiskeys, both Bourbon and Rye, have in general taken-up the insertion of an 'e'.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nIrish Whiskey, as one of the\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e greatest styles of Whiskey\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, is usually distilled three times, making it oh so smooth and pleasant to the tongue. Or as we overheard: 'The Irish are pussies, they distill their Whiskey three times'.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nUnfortunately,\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e the 20th Century\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e saw the decline and fall of the Irish Whiskey industry. In recent years Irish Whiskey started making a comeback and new distilleries are opening faster than we can ... erm... drink.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cu\u003eSmartass Corner:\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n1) There are \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethree general Irish Whiskey varieties\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e: 'Grain Whiskey' - mostly derived from corn, 'malted barley pot-still-distilled', and 'pure pot-still' or ‘single pot still’ as it is now officially known - a combination of malted and un-malted ‘green’ barley distilled in copper pot stills). Irish distillers use unmalted barley for less pronounced biscuit flavors. Irish Whiskeys tend to be super-smooth, less assertive in taste, and finish with a pleasant freshness.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\n2) \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIrish Coffee\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e was actually invented in San Francisco, not Ireland.
