Turns out, there are times when you want to adjust your circuit without manually turning a knob, and the\u003cstrong\u003e DS1841 I2C Logarithmic Resistor from Maxim\u003c\/strong\u003e can do just that. It's a programmable resistor, similar to an I2C potentiometer like the \u003cstrong\u003eDS3502 I2C Potentiometer\u003c\/strong\u003e, so why another?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe big difference between the two is how the resistance changes in relation to changes made to the wiper. The DS3502's resistance has a \u003cem\u003elinear\u003c\/em\u003e relationship to the wiper's setting. Each time you change the wiper by a given amount, the resistance will change by the same amount. With the DS1841, the relationship between resistance and the wiper setting is \u003cstrong\u003elogarithmic\u003c\/strong\u003e. This means that as the wiper setting changes, the amount of resistance will depend on where the current setting is in the wiper's range.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLog potentiometers are used in audio applications for things like volume control because they better match the response of human ear to sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe DS1841's resistance ranges from \u003cstrong\u003e22kOhms to 3.7 kOhms\u003c\/strong\u003e and has\u003cstrong\u003e 128 tap points\u003c\/strong\u003e. Even more interestingly, the DS1841 can be configured to \u003cstrong\u003eadjust its resistance based on temperature\u003c\/strong\u003e with hysteresis to keep things from jumping around.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdditionally, the temperature compensation can be adjusted by using the \u003cstrong\u003eLUT\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003cstrong\u003eL\u003c\/strong\u003eook \u003cstrong\u003eU\u003c\/strong\u003ep \u003cstrong\u003eT\u003c\/strong\u003eable) built into the DS1841. This table allows you to specify the wiper setting for each of 70 temperature increments between -39 and 100 degrees C, plus one each for above or below that range. You can even manually set the wiper to one of the entries in the LUT.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWorking with the DS1841 is easy. We've put it on a breakout PCB with the required support circuitry and SparkFun qwiic compatible \u003cstrong\u003eSTEMMA QT\u003c\/strong\u003e connectors to allow you to use it with other similarly equipped boards \u003cstrong\u003ewithout needing to solder.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eQT Cable is not included\u003c\/strong\u003e, but we have a variety in the shop. This handy little helper can work with 3.3V or 5V micros, so it's ready to get to work with a range of development boards. Well, if you try to do that you'll quickly find that the length of the cable adds capacitance and resistance that slows down the open-drain pullups used in I2C, making it hard to use 100KHz+ clock speeds. When the chip is powered and enabled, it will watch the SCL and SDA lines. When it sees them being pulled up through the I2C resistors, it will activate and dump in some current to give it a boost thru to the top power rail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYou can now achieve much faster data rates without having to noodle with resistors, and over long cables. We ran a 400 KHz OLED over 3 meters of phone wire with ease. With a 100KHz signal, we even ran a BME680 over 100 feet of Ethernet (about 3000pF round trip!), and had an OLED display the sensor details.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRuns with any bus voltage, from 1.6V to 5.5V and up to 400 KHz SCL speed, with cables up to 4000pF. No special firmware, software, or configuration required. Simply plug the power, ground, SCL and SDA connectors into your bus and watch as your rise times magically turn sawtooths into square waves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo get you going fast, we spun up a custom made PCB in the \u003cstrong\u003eSTEMMA QT\u003c\/strong\u003e form factor, making it easy to interface with. The STEMMA QT connectors on either side are compatible with the SparkFun Qwiic I2C connectors.
